Upper Room Hotel (Berlin, Germany)

3 Case Rating

Located in the South West of Berlin in Charlottenburg. Right next to Berlin Zoo but also many shops such as Nike, H &M and large department stores are closeby. Transportation links include S-Bahn station of Zoologischer Garten which say to Alexander Platz takes about 15-20 minutes. There is also a bus station where the X9 goes to Berlin Tegal airport every 15 minutes, it takes around 20 minutes depending on traffic. For Taxi it costs just under €20 from TXL airport.

Room was struggle to get to with heavy luggage- if you are given rooms 200-300 you have to go up a narrow spiral stair case, which with a large heavy case is hard work.
The room at the end of corridor, offered 5 beds. Two singles next to each other fairly comfortable low lying beds and 3 beds in an adjoining room- more of a family room. The adjoining room with 3 single beds is where the wardrobe is, which contains a small safe, iron and ironing board is but overall the wardrobe is very small for 5 guests.
This room is also where the TV is located which you can only watch by sitting in certain beds unless you sit on the floor, which is quite stained.
Mostly German cable with CNN & BBC News channels as only English options. Each bed offers a small lamp and the roof slanted ceiling offers windows for fresh air. This room also offers a cupboard unit below the TV that has offers an empty refrigerator.
The main room with the two beds together offers a kitchen unit with oven and stove’s- all electric, sink and microwave. This is also where some plates and pans are offered. There are also two small arm chairs by the window and a dining table but with two chairs only – so in total if 5 guest are in this room, not all can eat by the table- 1 seat is missing etc. On top of the table is a filter coffee machine and kettle but no teas or coffee is offered.
The bathroom is modern small with combined bath and shower, it offers a bidet and amenities are restricted to IBIS style fixed shampoo or moisturising hand wash by the sink. Nothing else.
Overall the carpet was rather stained and the decor is quite plain. It feels rather 1990’s. No pictures and quite dull. However it was spacious. There are some plugs offered here and there but not that close to bed’s unless you unplug the lamps. The large old style radiators are offered & dod warm up the room well and one unit AC is above.

Facilities offered include secure WIFI but at times the server drops. Other times it is quite fast. Hit and miss basically but it is free.
There is a bar at reception but no staff where there when I arrived it has about 4 stools and is right next to reception.
The highlight is definitely the breakfast room which has a nice selection of breads, meats, cheese, sausage, scrambled egg even green beans, various yogurts and cereals and overall a nice selection for this quaint hotel.

Staff are ok, not that helpful. After taking suit case upstairs and coming down for my small bag was asked if I needed any help in a rather unenthusiastic manner. They are somewhat helpful with directions but not exactly a warm service.
Overall for the price it was ok and location is fairly good, saying that I would say the difficulty of getting up the stairs puts me off staying here again.
