Ramada Almaty (Almaty, Kazakhstan)

3 Case Rating
Location Ramada is locked about 30 minutes drive to Almaty airport, it is reasonably close to city centre, though not directly in city centre which is about 5-6 blocks away. Within walking distance is a petrol station, some local restaurants, pharmacy & clothes shop. The tram's are nearby. Room Room was clean with a very classical luxury look, wooden furnishing, gold coloured lamps etc .The king size bed was of good firmess, not too hard, not too soft but comfortable. Bedside tables, lamps & convenient euro two pin plugs on each side, but no alarm clock. An adjoining desk is offered next to bed, of good size to work from, a nice lamp & telephone is offered with fairly confortable office chair. In addition a traditional arm chair is offered, though strangely not facing TV (but bed) along side small coffee table is offered. The bed does face a modern samsung TV which offers lots of channels some in English such as BBC world news & Euro news but majority is Russian & Kazakh. There is also a convenient wooden luggage rack connected to a medium sized fridge below which includes a comprehensive mini bar (that includes chewing gum & many snacks in addition to many drinks). Above is a complimentary generous litre bottle of water that also includes a kettle for hot drink making. For clothes is a large wooden wardrobe with a easy to use laptop size safe inside. Adjoining bathroom includes a combo bath/shower modern & clean that includes some Ramada branded mini bottles of shampoo, shower gel & body lotion, plus comb but bring your own conditioner as not offered. A sign does state they offer dental/shaving/female kits on request. Overall the room was clean & conservative classical look but lacked anything modern. For the savy business traveller, there is though unfortunately no iron or trouser press, no robe, no alarm clock limiting the executive appeal for the business traveller. I also found it quite cold (September) as no heater, only A/C but still cold even on warmest setting or off. Facilities WIFI is free, fast & secure - available for multiple devices. There is a bar, though not so relaxing as despite the classic look has annoying MTV commercial dance music on the Tv's banging it out. There is also a restaurant & business center but did not see/use. On the ground floor is a SPA offering massage service, fairly reasonably priced & decent service- nothing dodgy about it. There is also quite a nice pool & sauna. Staff Staff are ok, reception staff speak English well & fairly robotic with fast check-in/out. SPA staff don't speak English but do make effort as did bar staff. Overall the room could be more functional & one off putting concern, though this is not the hotels fault, but seated in lobby you cannot avoid seeing the evening stream of Indian men & local prostitutes - though they came from outside. This may be the norm in Almaty but I would likely consider elsewhere on my next visit as it was such an influx that it gave the hotel an uncomfortable feeling.

Radisson Hotel Astana (Astana, Kazashstan)

4 Case Rating
Location Located about 30 minutes drive from airport & about 5-10 minutes taxi or one hour walk to main sight seeing area such as where Baiterek tower is located. Within area is a nice recreation park right next to hotel on river side. Room Room is a comfortable executive standard room that was spacious & offered a large comfortable king size bed that was presented with slippers & towel robe on top. Bedside tables, lamps & convenient power sockets each side of bed. Facing the bed is a large desk unit which has small lamp & mini bar fridge below (snacks, miniature liquor, soft drinks & beer). Built in Luggage rack in unit & easy to reach euro plug sockets. Accompanied by a adequately comfortable chair to work from. A large mirror also exist as does a lounge chair & circular table. The TV above the desk offers 47 tv channels of which more than half are Russian & Kazakh, but BBC news, CNN, Bloomberg, bridge & Fashion TV are English options. There are also : x3 Italian channels, x3 German Channels, x2 French, x2 Turkish & 1 Arabic, Belorussian & Tatar channels are offered. A large wardrobe by the entrance that faces the bathroom offered a trouser press & attached ironing board. A fairly easy to use medium size safe is above that, wouldn't fit laptops unless the smallest kind but great for wallets, tablets, documents etc. Large smount of coat hangers & space with shoe polish, horn & needle set amenities offered. In the bathroom which has a deco look, decked in light & brown marble offered a spacious shower cubicle & sink plus a bidet is offered. Amenities include hair dryer, thisisworks branded mini bottles of shampoo, conditioner, shower gel & body lotion. Plus hotel offers vanity set, cotton buds & shower hat. Towels are plentiful & whole area is spotless. The room offers central A/C but also a hot radiator as it can gets cold in Astana. Facilities Wifi works fine- you get a code which worked fine on both of my devices, quite fast. Catering, 1 restaurant & 2 bars. Only experienced breakfast at the normally Italian restaurant - food buffet was very good, fresh with good variation of choices especially bread & meat. In the lobby area which has a large dedicated concierge desk in centre, bigger than check-in/out. This is also next to a laundry room. Around this area are some high end boutique watch & jewelry shops. As well as local artistic high end souvenirs. To get to leisure facilities, which is a separate company & requires a voucher from reception. I believe there is gym, spa & swimming pool but did not see due to not having enough time to get voucher, perhaps they should offer voucher or mention this at check-in? I did see a hair salon where they cut mens & women hair., plus ladies service such Manicure.. The two bars in this hotel are close to each other, one in lobby & one behind- very elaborate luxury looking furnishings etc. staff Staff were welcoming, check-in was quite quick & wifi was explained. Concierge staff were in particular very helpful with what to see for a fews hours in city before connecting flight. Restaurant staff, could not speak English but promptly clean table etc, they do smile & acknowledge you., Overall Hotel is well positioned for Astana but there is not much to see or do, but for business, this hotel is ideal in all ways.
