Omni Parker House (Boston, USA)

4 Case Rating
Location Hotel is located right in the centre of downtown, right next to freedom trails. Shops, bars, restaurants and everything of a downtown city is on the door step. Perfect location for tourism and business alike. From BOS airport it takes around 10 minutes. Room The room on the top floor was quite small but ok for one person. Classical style old room but clean with wooden decor and beige carpets in a historical theme. A high king size bed is offered in which was very comfortable. Either side are glass top bed side tables, each with lamp, telephone and easy-to access plug sockets built into the side of it.There was also an alarm clock set to wrong time. A wooden desk makes up one of them and is sufficient for working on a laptop, though a large mirror faces you. There is also some small basic coffee facilities. A not so comfortable armchair is also in room and this faces a corner unit that makes up the extensive mini bar. A large TV (with over 50 channels being offered) is on top but it means you annoyingly have to face it at an side view from bed. A small cupboard has a basic luggage rack, ironing board and safe with some robes and area to hang clothes. The bathroom is poky offering the typical combined bath and shower. Very dated and amenities include soaps, shampoo and body lotion from Omni hotels. Being on the top floor, room did have a view of the town hall and also offered blacked out drapes. The window can be opened. There is also a AC unit as well. The room is paper thin walls and got woken up at 3am thanks to neighbours having a party. Facilities The hotel offers a bar and restaurant set in nice grand historical decor. However did not try the food. WIFI is free if your a member of OMNI otherwise you have to pay. There is a business centre with a computer but it is not free to surf internet. Also a souvenir shop and star bucks is in the building. On the ground floor there is a historical walk with pictures plus a full modern gym. Staff Staff are mixed, reception are ok. Restaurant host was a little judgemental when asked where lobby toilet was as he assumed I wasn't a guest. Check-in took a while as behind loads of air crew in which they should have a separate check-in like most hotels- because it takes ages as they get rooms for all their crew. The hotel is in a stately home of classical and historical significance and therefore you pay for it- somewhat like boutique hotel. However for what you get room it seems a bit over priced and it was not a quiet room either. Noisy at 10pm then woken up at 3. Bring ear plugs.

Second Home Peru (Barranco, Peru)

4 Case Rating
Location The house is perfectly located within the vicinity of Barranco, everything is of minimal walking distance to some good restaurants, bars and a lot of street art work close to location. From Lima airport by Taxi- it takes around 40min-1hr. They use some local cab drivers in which they charge $20 for a pick up. $30 if using an airport taxi. You can walk down to the beach in 5-10 minutes. Miraflores walking is about 45 minutes. The house is on a hill cliff top and offers an amazing view from both the room and the garden of the coastline of Lima out to the Pacific Ocean. It's very relaxing to open the balcony doors and listen to the waves at night with a nice fresh sea air breeze. Room My room (3) was Ocean facing. It's initially a simple modest designed old but large room that grows on you quickly. The bed is very comfortable with a decent mattress and soft linen. Bed side table lamps either side but hard to find access to any close plug sockets. The room offers a chair, side table with two bottles of water on it, a standing fan plus overhead fan with a light directly over the bed. A tiny TV faces the bed offering local cable options and a tall wooden wardrobe. There is an open plan bathroom right inside the room with toilet and a classical old free standing Bath tub combined as a shower with curtains. Couples should be ok but sharing friends might find the open bathroom to be awkward privacy wise, since the toilet is in the same room. Amenities include some eco friendly shampoo and soaps. Decent towels. It initially feels simple comparing to what one is basically charged at the same rate as neighbouring 4 star hotels, but it warmed on me because the ambience is a unique experience. The wooden balcony doors for instance that can be opened, is great for hearing the sea air, you can even have a bath & watch the waves from it (in room 3). I was blown away by how relaxing & unique it is, just listening to the waves and observing the art in the old room was a special experience. Facilities The hotel offers free WIFI that is slightly slow but still it was available throughout the building, works for multiple devices. On my room and I believe the others have communal porch areas where you relax and watch the sea, depending where you are. Front communal balcony as well offers a some nice seats with a great view of the sea, if your not in the front ocean facing rooms. You get breakfast included in the price that is given out to you but it is quite minimal. A slice of melon, pineapple, 3 bread rolls & egg cooked to you liking. It's fresh but could be more of an offering of juices. Obviously you are staying in a art museum and the grounds have paintings and sculptures everywhere. Really nice pieces from this famous Peruvian artist. Tours can be arranged. The beautiful garden has a superb sea view. Stairs there lead to a pool a few levels down the side of the cliff. Nice refreshing pool of decent size for a private house, surrounded by art work. Very secure grounds that has a door bell system to get in the large steel door. There are also friendly animals - dog and cat, they don't hassle you & are very mellow so do not worry if your scared. Staff Staff are ok but not so efficient, booked a taxi to pick me up and one expect staff to check flight arrival time. Because I was an hour & half early from Madrid, I had to take an airport taxi. However return journey used theirs. Driver is very nice but doesn't speak much English. Hotel staff are friendly enough but its got a slight 'this is a privilege to be staying here' vibe, with a detailed rules and regulations letter you get upon arrival (like going to boarding school). However I understand they need to preserve the place, but one wouldn't get such a letter at a hotel. The check-out time is also very early at 11am, most earliest of other hotels in area, but you can use the pool and stow your baggage. Overall though try and speak Spanish since majority of staff don't speak English. I did enjoy my experience staying at an art museum and rate it as that rather than staying in hotel. You do pay for it though but the art work was worth it. Ocean facing rooms is certainly worth the upgrade.

Sunrock Guesthouse (Kempton Park, South Africa)

4 Case Rating
Location Guest house is located about 5-10 minutes drive from JNB airport. They offer free 24hr transfers if you inform them of your flight details. If however like me you decide to hire a car, to get to Soweto is about 1 hour and downtown area around 35-45 minutes. Kempton park seems like a suburb of the airport. I wouldn't say there is much to walk to etc. The place is very secure inside a compound. Room The room is rows of ground level attached cottages with glass sliding doors and private covered porches. The room is quite small due to the large king size bed that takes up most of the space. However there is still room for a luggage rack workable desk with kettle & plugs and tall empty wardrobe. The bed is very comfortable with lots of pillows, nice bedding and bed side tables each side. Access to plug sockets though is limited to the desk sockets. If your not local to the country, you will need a plug socket adaptor because SA has their own unique design of which main stream adaptors won't fit. Staff though did kindly provide one to me since I was only there one night. The room also offers a cable TV positioned in corner of ceiling with many international channels. The room also offers an above bed fan but no AC, however didn't find it hot. Decor is warm, homely and room is very clean with a Christian feel about it. The desk is sufficient if you need to get work done. The adjoining bathroom is of adequate size offering a shower cubicle their own in-house branded mini amenity bottles. The noticeable items missing in the room is a safe & mini fridge but this is a guest house. I would say a safe is not important because the property seems very secure in my opinion. A couple of other thing is that a blue light does face you from TV area (when lights out and off) in which can't be turned off. It's kind of annoying so bring an eye mask, There provide a nice collection of main stream magazines to read. Facilities The hotel offers free parking, free wifi (though it is slightly slow) & free breakfast. The breakfast starts and finishes quite early and offers a buffet plus an egg cooked to your liking, it's meeting a good standard of food. They also offer a dinner buffet at around 160zar but since I went out I didn't experience this. All these catering facilities are by the medium size pool in what they call the entertainment zone. This consists of a bar, pool & ping pong table, a gym upstairs and plenty of tables to sit & unwind with complimentary coffee. There is also an out door area with fire burning to relax at. There is also a traditional curio shop. Overall for a guest house it offered very nice facilities. Staff Staff are what shone out at Sunrock. Naturally helpful and caring especially with their concerns about me visiting Hilbrow. Check-in and check-out is fast and they remember your first name. Staff also accompany you to room. Excellent level of service that gave a homely and a relaxed atmosphere to your stay. Previously I stated at Intercontinental at airport & while that is nice. Sunrock proved to be a decent alternative that was quiet, clean, welcoming and excellent value for money. I would definitely stay here again if I go back to JNB.

Coriacea Boutique Resort (Phuket, Thailand)

4 Case Rating
Location The hotel is located about 10 minutes drive north of airport. You can actually walk down the beach about 10-15 minutes and be located at end of runway, great for watching planes come & go. The only issue is the taxis don't do share vans like they do to Phuket town or Patong in which those places cost like 150baht. To get to Mai Khao is a extortionate fee of 600 baht for a 5-10min journey. About 10 times the price of Bangkok taxis. However after discussing with staff for return journey, I was advised to use grab app in which is about half the price, it's like Uber. Mai Khao is about 5-10 min bicycle ride, it is a small little village but does have a few restaurants, pharmacy, 7-11 & some massage places but don't expect a lively night life spot. The hotel location is quiet with a very clean and nice beach with great sunset, perfect if you need to be close to airport. Some people have commented on aircraft noise but this is only noticeable by the pool on the beach, where you can see take off but at a distance and certainly no overhead planes. Room The room is very nice and meeting a good standard. I found no such mould smell that another reviewer commented on. It's a boutique room with a comfortable mattress topped king size bed. Decent quality and well thought out comfort bedding. The bed offers flexible reading lights, bedside tables & US plug sockets either side. Nice coloured walls and a photo creating a relaxing beach-feel ambience. Facing the bed is a large long desk with a stool facing a mirror. Good for making up but not so much for working due to no plugs nearby. A colourful arm chair and large TV also faces you. Full satellite cable channels that has something suitable for all international travellers to watch. There is a nice luggage rack & mini bar fridge with various items. A large wardrobe with laptop size safe and robes are also offered. The bathroom is of adequate size, very clean and new (hotel is only a year old) offering a rain shower and detachable head. They offer some mini bottle amenities of shower gel, shampoo and conditioner plus dental & vanity sets. The bathroom like majority of new Asian hotels has a window that faces the bedroom but blinds are offered for privacy. The room also offers a large balcony with a comfortable bench suitable for smokers. My room was in lower price bracket and faced the lagoon. It was ok and quiet. The sea view would be nice upgrade though since the sunsets are quite stunning. Overall the highlight of the room was the soft bed in which reminded me close to the Sofitel beds but not quite, though very comfortable and has a warm boutique ambience. Facilities There is fast speed secure wifi for multiple devices hotel wide. For catering the hotel offers a bar and restaurant in which offered a full Thai menu and I enjoyed the tasty yellow curry priced around 200 baht. Cocktails are well made and would recommend their signature Blue Coriacea. They offer a happy hour during sunset hours of 150bt per cocktail. Breakfast overall was a better standard than many Thai hotels I have stayed at outside of Bangkok with three hot food options, eggs as you like it, pancakes or Thai soup made to order but also a continental buffet is offered with breads & fruits. There is a pool, smaller than expected on photos but is nice for a cool dip with fantastic views of beach in front, it's an Infiniti design and there is a swim up bar that didn't seem to be in operation when I was there despite hotel being full. They also offer a gym but the main highlight to me was the free use of bicycles to cycle around the beach, which has a dedicated pathway or road to village. They have lights and the village is quiet so not dangerous to cycle about in which I enjoyed. There is no spa but the hotel can arrange a massage at hotel from local spas in village. If your hiring a car there is ample parking spaces. Staff Staff are generally very friendly but not very proactive. It's not a hotel where you can expect to be offered a drink when on sun loungers by pool but you have to go to bar which means going into restaurant. Not a great option if you are wet coming out of pool. They are quite strict with check-in times and arriving at 10am was told check-in is not open until 2 said in a blunt manner & had to ask if ok to wait by the pool which was not a problem. However asked for a towel and initially told not available but then was offered after asking someone else. Some staff do not speak English that well either. The manager though is very nice and she does the cocktails in the evening. Overall though for Phuket in which is saturated in tourism the staff at this hotel do have an enthusiastic upbeat smile to make passengers welcome and they acknowledge you, which is lacking in many beach hotels in Thailand these days. I certainly would stay at this hotel again when needing to be in Phuket as I enjoyed this very clean boutique hotel. It offers with a decent beach and enjoyed cycling around the village both daytime and in the evening thanks to the great perk to include free bikes since various places in town charge.

Rendezvous Hotel Perth Scarborough (Perth, Australia)

4 Case Rating
Location About 30 minutes drive from Perth Airport, around 10-15 from downtown Perth. It is right on Scarborough Beach promenade, the beach is 1 min walk. There are tons of bars, restaurants and shops all less a few minutes walk away or within building. Room Room on the 20th floor offered a nice sea view from a balcony set up with two chairs and a table. The room itself is large with a king size bed soft bed, bedside tables with lamps on each side, both with plug access (AUS) and an alarm clock. To the side of the bed is two nice arms chairs and a small table. Facing the bed is a long unit, with a glass top desk on the right hand side, lamp and plugs. A large set of drawers has a big TV on top with over 40 DTV cable channels with many options. Below is a mini bar that offers some soft drinks, chocolates, beers and a wine bottle. There is also a kettle for hot drinks. A convient luggage rack is also offered on one side. A large mirror sliding doors opens to a large laptop size safe and ironing board. The bathroom is of adequate size with a large shower cubicle. Amenities include Bathe branded body wash, body balm, shampoo and conditioner. Overall the decor is nice and the room is fairly comfortable but would say mid range rather luxurious. However it was clean has digital AC and a balcony with a superb view of the coast. Facilities Catering facilities include a restaurant and lobby bar- that has a nice snooker table. Didn't try the food. Leisure facilities include a lagoon style pool very nice with a waterfall and pool bar. Very nice for children. There is also a observation deck which is great for a sunset over the ocean. There is a business centre as well. WIFI is complimentary for 12 hours. Parking is available for 15 dollars a day. Staff Staff seem friendly and relaxed. Easy check-in and out. overall good service including pool bar area. Overall a nice hotel in a perfect spot. make sure you get a sea view balcony, it is worth it.

Sheraton Xi’an Hotel (Shaanxi, China)

4 Case Rating
Location Located fairy near to the main central area of Xian, but just outside of the city wall. To get to say the main city temples it is 2-3km away, whilst the main airport is around 45 minutes drive away. Room The SPG preferred room on the 16th floor was clean and cosy but somewhat dull and dated for their premium loyal members level product. The room offered a large king size bed that was quite tough. It was ok though for sleeping but did not have the noticeable comfy mattress topper experienced in some Sheratons. There were two types of pillow, one feather and soft the other more springy. Slept well though. Either side are marble top bed side tables, each with a lamp and one with alarm clock and phone. You can control the lights with switches and main side has dimmer function but unfortunately no accessible power sockets next to bed. To the side of the bed is a lounge arm chair with foot stall comfy enough to watch the TV that faces the bed in upright position from side. There is a large glass top desk offering a dimmable lamp & mirror plus a full international power socket plug unit with doc sockets. LAN cable is also offered and a phone. The table is clean but feels a bit dated. There is a large wide screen TV facing bed offers around about 52 channels such as BBC, CNN, RT, Bloomberg, discovery with the rest being local Channels. Below the TV is a large cabinet with mini bar of small drinks and a chocolate but also a large red wine. Hot drink facilities include only one sachet of coffee plus breakfast, black and chamomile tea. There is a padded luggage rack conveniently next to the TV. In the hall way is the kettle and two complimentary waters. There is a large wardrobe with lap top size safe, one robe, pair of slipppers, iron and board. The bathroom faces this area and is very Art Deco with the American influence of the combination bath shower. Something you don't expect of a premium 5 star hotel but more along the lines of a motel etc. However though dated, the marble finish bathroom was clean and decorative. Amenities include a full set of Sheraton branded shower gel, shampoo, conditioner, body lotion, dental and razor kits and mouthwash. Towels are decent. The main room has a dial heating/AC system that is quiet and worked ok. Overall a clean cosy room with carpeted floor and classical wooden decor offering good natural light from the large windows. Just lacking anything innovative in room. Facilities The hotels offers restrictive wifi whereby sometimes VPN works sometimes not. For non Chinese users bing is only search option as the rest are government banned. It is ok in room but it is not secure but you need password to use in lobby. Other business facilities include a dedicated business centre with offices and meeting room but also 5 or so desk top computers in the lobby with printer. Again it was slow to use. Catering facilities included three restaurants, only used one for breakfast and was adequate but a bit disappointing such as no egg station. Just a big buffet, other than breads & cereals not much is for the international guest. There is a large lobby bar with many international beers plus a cafe area with cakes etc. Leisure facilities include a pool, long for lengths and a modern gym with decent equipment. There is also a spa for massages. On the ground floor there is A SPG gift shop where you can buy the bedding as well as a Chinese shop for drinks etc. A wedding shop also is there as well as ATM machine. Overall a decent amount of facilities. Staff Staff are quite friendly and helpful and spoke English adequately. Overall for a Chinese city Sheraton it was as a bit disappointing in terms of room and breakfast but does have 5 star facilities. The location though is good for sight seeing and business in down town area.

Days Inn Bellingham (Washington, USA)

4 Case Rating
Location The Days Inn is located on one of the main roads into centre of Bellingham, quite close to University. There is s big Arboretum a few blocks away, great for walks and the coast side park views is within 5-10 minute drive away. Seattle airport is about 2.5 hr drive /100 miles and Vancouver airport is 1hr 20 or so by car. In terms of walking distance there are fast food restaurants and a recreational dispensary across the road. Some other pharmacy and cafes not far to walk. Room The room was quite dated but comfortable for a Days Inn. A large soft double bed offered bed side tables, an alarm clock and each side had a lamp but you will need to unplug one if you need a plug. There is a large heater unit next to a large table with chairs suitable for dining. Facing the bed is a set of wardrobes with TV on top, it's connected to a separate box so it's not so easy to just turn on. However once figured, they offer about 70 channels such as main cable and HBO channels. A desk with mirror in front is shown with telephone, lamp and chair. There is also a coffee maker, microwave stacked on top of a small fridge on floor. A side open wall wardrobe with hangers if offered, and had a luggage rack, iron and ironing board. The bathroom is of standard motel size with combined bath shower unit offering small amenity bottles of body lotion, shampoo and conditioner plus soap. Overall the room was comfortable and reasonable for price paid. The only slight issue I had was the slight pong smell as you enter I think from the carpet. You don't really notice it after a while though. It does feel very dated. Facilities The hotel offers decent standard secure for multiple devices free wifi. Free parking and vending machines. It is a motel. There is a lounge seating area by reception. Breakfast is offered limited to a panacea machine, some breads, bagels, muffins and cereals. There is also some decent coffee offered. Staff Really nice reception staff, chilled out like most of the people in this town. Was able to check me in early and explained details well. The do annoyingly require a deposit despite empty mini bar but presume they have had cases of people walking off with their microwaves or TV etc. Overall good value for money in a town of the interstate between Seattle and Vancouver great for a stop over not far from Canadian border and also good for outlet shopping when not wanting to be close to Seattle area. The room could just do with a safe and some air freshener.

Swiss-Belhotel Harbour Bay (Batam, Indonesia)

4 Case Rating
Location Located in a central area in Batam not far from all the downtown area if not within. From the airport it takes about 30 minutes drive. Within area is a convenience store & reflexology across the road and some shops down a walk way. The harbour is also just down the road. Room Room was of decent size, modern with good lighting- very Chinese hotel design. The huge king size bed was very comfortable with a mattress topper offered. Bed side tables each side offering lamps and international plug sockets. No alarm clock but a phone is offered. Facing the bed is a clear TV with a good selection of channels not only local but some international choices. There is also a mini bar below with drink and food items. Plus a kettle on top for making hot drinks. The rooms offers an armchair, coffee table and glass top workable desk with lamp- next to international plugs. The room also has a luggage rack and wardrobe that includes a laptop size safe and slippers but no robes. The bathroom is also of good size offering a spacious shower cubicle but the water pressure seems to fade out now and then which you keep have to turn off and on again, Mini hotel branded bottles of body lotion, shower gel, shampoo and conditioner are offered as well as a full set of amenities such as shaver and dental kits etc. Then only weakness of the room was the digital AC unit - the room was presented hot and it took a long while with AC on with no temperature change so had to call maintenance. They did repair it but then the room became too cold and the fan is quite noisy. This did disrupt my sleep overall which was annoying. Facilities The hotel offers free WIFI which worked fine without any issue, it is not secure and multiple devices can be used. Leisure facilities include a smallish swimming pool but possible to do lengths- with sun loungers and some outdoor seating. There is also a separate male and female sauna and a gym with mostly cardio equipment. There is also a SPA and I had massage in which was quite average. Catering incudes a lounge bar, restaurant and cafe- did not use any of these due to late arrival and early departure. This is all in lobby area and is not that well ventilated - so found it quite hot even for check-in and check-out which is next to these facilities. The hotel does offer meeting and conference rooms as well. Staff Staff were ok but lacked efficiency, check-out took a while with only one staff in the morning, frustrating when you have only one car waiting to pick you up. Overall the bed was comfortable but the AC system let the room comfort down, and this seemed to be the case in the lobby and catering area's as well. It sort of wants to be 5 star but is obviously a 4 star hotel. However if I came back to Batam I would choose alternative hotel as sleep in the most comfortable and this was affected.

Mountain View Lodge (Washington, USA)

4 Case Rating
Location Mountain view lodge is located just off HWY 12, a few minutes from the town of Backwood. Mt. Rainer national park is about a 18 mile drive away. From Seattle airport by car takes just under 3 hours drive and about 100 miles away. Portland is just over 2 hours away. The lodge is an area of stunning nature & about 3 min walk is a flowing river, great for photos. Packwood is small mountain type town with a small logging locals type vibe. It's very chilled & picturesque with Mt Rainer view seen from it. An old scene like going back in time and does offer a handful of restaurants, small food stores, liquor and tobacco store, a salon bar and a few shops and gas station. If you like Burgers then try Cliff dropper - delicious hand made burgers. Room The upstairs standard room was simple but cosy, it's located on inner side of the motel so my windows views was of the garden but directly outside windows are hotel corridors. However the curtains are thick. The room has nice old style wooden wall decor of bright colours. A heater unit and AC unit is offered, the heater worked well. There is a nice antique desk and drawers, all wooden style. The double bed was comfortable and one side has a wooden bed side table with a nice lamp. Plug sockets on wall nearby. Facing the bed on top of the wooden drawers is a smallish TV that offered plenty of local cable channels at least 40, it worked well and was sufficient. There is a fridge in the room and a old wooden desk with large mirror in front plus telephone. The wardrobe is an open closet with luggage rack and coat hangers. Bathroom offers a shower cubicle with plenty of towels plus body lotion and shower gel mini bottle amenities. Overall the room is cosy and appropriate value for money for this idyllic hiking country area. However don't expect a safe or hot drink making facilities. Facilities My room had free wifi with a password and worked fine. Note the area has no phone reception, so having wifi is helpful in planning your day. The lobby though does offer some leaflets and was told they offer breakfast there at 730 in the morning, however had to leave earlier than that so didn't experience it. There is a vending machine for drinks though outside. The grounds of the hotel offer a nice garden with small lodge rooms surrounding it & I believe a communal outdoor fire place. There is a pool that likely opens in the summer and a children's play area. The hotel offers free parking & the highway is right outside but it's very quiet at night. Staff Reception lady was really nice, she offered me a room upgrade on ground floor if I paid hotel directly and cancel my Hotel com reservation. However since I collect nights I declined. She did offer a helpful map of the area for forest hikes & where to eat. Overall it's a old lodge but cheapest in area and it was good, very cosy, very clean, quiet and comfortable at end of October which is not high season as the sky passes were closed. The proximity is great being close to drive to popular hikes and skiing area. Wildlife is also in this area & you may see a elks on the property. I would definitely stay here again if I came back to mount Rainer.

Kansai Airport Washington Hotel (Rinkuoraikita, Japan)

4 Case Rating
Location Hotel is located just across the bridge from Kansai Airport. There is a free shuttle which takes 10 minutes. Please see photo for connection times as of October 2016. However if you miss these times, the train station: Rinku Town is 5 minutes walk away & costs 350 yen to the airport. For Osaka it take 1.5 hours by train from this station. Room The cosy non smoking room on the 9th floor offered 2 double bed each with one pillow and a central bed side table in centre. Here, built into back wall is a alarm clock and convenient light control system with buttons for lights around . Typical Japanese style. There is also a phone and some tissues with buttons for massage and alarm etc. To the side of the bed is a large window which you can open for fresh air and is also a emergency exit. It's a little noisy though. There is also touch screen controls on an AC unit and air humidifier machine. Facing the bed is also a cabinet with a very small TV on top maybe 13"- all Japanese but believe for a 1000y you can buy various VOD movie packages. Otherwise normally you won't hear anything in English , BBC news for instance is dubbed. There is also a small fridge , kettle and some desk space to work with lamps and a mirror. Luggage rack at end that has some drawers with hotel Pyjamas. The room also has a tall mirror. The bathroom was of ok size for Japan offering the standard small deep bath and shower combo, wash let and a very good selection of amenities that include Shisedo shampoo, conditioner and body soap. Plus dental kits, shaved sets, brush and vanity sets. Overall the room had firm but comfy beds & as I was on my own I used both pillows which made comfort better as personally think one pillow is not enough. Overall i found the room typical Japanese business, slightly dull but actually cosy and comfortable. Facilities Wifi is available but was so slow in the evening, like dial up. It is secure but I think everyone is building is using it so speed is slow- you tube would not even load up. It was better at 530am. There are two computers in lobby to rent. Catering wise there is a buffet restaurant both for dinner & breakfast but did not try - see photo for prices. There is also massage service which is 5000y for 40 min , which is way too expensive for me but can be arranged in you room it appeared. Each floor offers vending machines and on the 2nd floor -a very convenient 24 hour family mart that has snack items, some meals and even muni stationary. Handy if you arrive late like I did. I don't believe there is any leisure facilities at least no signage for anything. Staff As always in Japan super efficient fast check - in. Clear with all information and overall pleasant. As summary a great place to stay between flights with easy access to the train station of you need to go somewhere else or the airport. But they do offer a frequent bus transfer service. Wifi was just the weakness.

4 Case Rating
Location Hotel is quite well located, just on the outskirts of the city centre in a residential area. Depending where in the city centre you are headed, it's only a 10 - 20 minutes walk to the centre. Nearby is a supermarket, cinema and some restaurants. Bars & shops as well. Room Room on top floor was quite a simple room, a notch up from Ibis but similar set up. The bed was soft , one of the softest mattress I have slept in. It's ok but a bit of shock when your home mattress is firm. It offers these 4 pillows that aren't very soft so it's a bit mis match plus they lay the duvet all the way to the back under pillows. which seems like they can't be bothered to make a bed right but then that just might be their standardised way. Behind bed in centre is a convenient lights main switch plus either side are tiny bedside tables with lamps and Flexi-lights. Ok for reading but they aren't right over the bed etc. Plus a phone on one table . No nearby plug sockets. A jazzy arm chair comes with a small table and then there is a very small desk where lamp exists and two EU plug sockets. Facing the bed , to the side is a TV with 28 or so channels from all over Europe. It's seems standard cable but good selection. There is an open wardrobe with coat hangers , luggage rack with kettle and some teas/coffee plus a safe - not large enough for laptop but money, tablets and phones all fit ok. The bathroom reminds me of IBIS hotels design, very poky with a shower cubicle - they use a combined shampoo / shower gel dispenser but best western does include a mini body lotion item , vanity set and odd face towels by the brand Bhuvana. There is a hair dryer plus EU sockets The room has a large radiator , as well as a air conditioner unit. Windows can also open but quite noisy as main road is outside. Overall I slept ok but the mattress is so soft, the room is clean but overall quite small and simple for BW. The noise which can be heard throughout did wake me up a few times- both the road and other guests. One thing to say is a odd un welcoming smell as you walk in but that is not that noticeable after a while. Facilities The hotel offers free secure WIFI for multiple devices. It worked fast and was well. There is a bar and restaurant but did not use these but looked nice and colourful. Breakfast is charged at 15 Euros. I did not try since the supermarket a 2 min walk was a cheaper option. There is also free parking but it's not a very orderly car park ram packed too hard to park but I guess I was there with last free place at night. Decor in the hotel is colourful and it is very clean. They do offer some vending machines both drinks and snack items at reception. There is also some conference rooms. The hotel does offer a small elevator and they offer some airport luggage carts for you to use for your bags. Staff Staff are very pleasant and helpful. AsIi arrived the car park was explained to me as too full so told which streets to park nearby which are free during the day- was a bit disappointing to hear as this was one of the reason I booked hotel was for free parking. Later though when i was about to move car from directly outside (which is free after 9pm-9am) and asked staff which streets to go for, I was told a space became available and staff were keen to tell me. Overall check-in and check-out was fast and staff did so in a friendly manner. Overall the hotel room is ok but felt slightly over priced. Walls are also thin so you hear you a lot during the night including the road outside. It was quite a convenient location but I think I would try somewhere else if I come to Eindhoven again. Somewhere more quieter room as I am a light sleeper, plus the mattress was just too soft for my back. It was a last minute booking so perhaps the £62 rate is higher than their normal rate for a Thursday night.

Best Western Atlantis Hotel (Melbourne, Australia)

4 Case Rating
Location Located in one of the business districts of Melbourne close to city centre , located not far about 5 minutes walk to Sky bus which goes to Melbourne airport (RTN 32AUS). There is also Southern Cross train station, Cole supermarkets, Hungry jacks and Subway outlets all very close to hotel. To drive from MEL airport it takes around 35 minutes. Room The room was simple ,white wall decor, slightly grubby on edges but still fairly spacious. Just had no character to the ambience. But offered functionality. The bed was comfortable of medium firmness offering adequate pillows. Either side are two glass top bed side tables, one with a phone and the other an alarm clock. Light switches that are spot lights above are offered each side. This is a small sofa seat on one side and a wardrobe on the other- this includes a Ironing board plus plenty of coat hangers. A large luggage rack exists as well. Facing bed is a large TV that offered 28 DTV channels some local some American TV series. There is also a DVD player offered underneath. Next to this is a working desk also with a phone and a few AUS plug sockets. No desk light but overhead lights. In the corridor is a small mirror area with plugs - below is a empty mini bar- just sachets of milk to accompany the tea and coffee with kettle on one of the side shelves. There is also an iron there. The bathroom was of adequate size but offering very basic amenities - only x2 soaps, shampoo and conditioner. Would be nice if they offered shower gel instead. Good selection of towels though. Overall for the price the room was functional and good it just felt a bit clinical and dull. Such as no lamps etc. They could also offer better functional amenities. Facilities WIFI is free but only for 3 items up to 1000mb only - otherwise there are chargeable options. Not sure if hotel offers any business facilities. However leisure included a decent size indoor pool, dry sauna and decent sized gym - did not use any but appeared clean. Catering did not try but menu is presented in room. The last order is at 915ppm and breakfast at 1030am. They charge 3 AUS for any room service. food is all Italian pasta and appetisers, but breakfast does offer a good selection of dishes such as Egg Benedict- prices range from 8-30AUS. Parking is available at the hotel inside same building with in/out privileges at 15 AUS a day. Staff Staff explained very little detail at check-in, simply asked for passport but could of explained WIFI or offer some degree of enthusiasm with service. No facilities were mentioned and service couldn't have been more robotic and lacking in detail. Overall this was reasonably priced hotel with a pool and parking. However it has got a poor vibe and room is simply so dull than even Ibis appears more exciting. I would likely try somewhere else in Melbourne.

The L Resort Krabi (Krabi, Thailand)

4 Case Rating
Location L resort is located directly on Ao Nang beach with a street in between. From Krabi airport you can choose to have faster hotel service at 600bt or take the bus outside of arrivals for 150bt pick up/drop off outside hotel. The bus is fine , not uncomfortable. It is just takes a bit longer (over 1 hour) since it stops at other hotels enroute. The beach is literary 10metres across road. Whilst the beach is no Mauritius in terms of sea, the beach itself is lovely to walk at end of day with its scenic back drop of limestone mountains. Not a dirty beach (no boats) and is very chilled but the water is a bit brown and cloudy. The tide doesn't go out until about 1-2pm so not possible to sunbathe in morning and not a beach I would recommend for children. Also noticed some water streams from local restaurant going into sea, not sure if this is sewage so be careful. Overall Better to take day trip to Hong Island (600bt) where beach is stunning. Railay beach is also nearby at 100bt a long boat ride but they only go if there is 8 people so you may have to wait. I missed it due to bad weather. The sidewalk outside hotel directly has a Tuk Tuk stand. Its a busy street but wide walkways full of mostly tour companies, restaurants, souvenir stores with the odd pharmacy and Burger King. The hotel is about 5-10 min walk to the next beach along ,much longer (Nopparat Thara). At the other end of street is a hill where most of hotels are & mostly massage places and bars. There is an area on same beach street as hotel where lady boys on street try and force you to this area full bars, just bars didn't see anything seedy, but in my opinion it had annoying Edm music & loud so didn't stay for a drink. Be wary for light sleepers, you can hear the music especially when outside of your balcony and a thumping bass is heard lightly in room at times, even at 2am. During the day you don't really hear the street noise unless your dining which is right in front lobby facing road. Room The large Lite room with double bed was located on the 4th floor, like I think most rooms, the balcony faces the pool area. Exceptionally clean, innovative and modern room but lacking in warmth and anything Thai. All very boutique, white and purple with a cool but cold type of ambience. The double bed was actually very comfortable and slept very well. Either side are bedside tables with drawers and plug sockets - international and USB socket. One side has a very modern phone with a AV in so believe it plays music, its also Bluetooth connectable with alarm clock plus 3 plug adaptor wires , old Apple, lightning and mini USB. The master light switch is here as well. Lighting is interesting , a orange light built into bed post directly behind bed, creates a warm ambience and good for reading books. There is also a sort of blue / grey deco style lighting in ceiling again creates a whole different vibe. But overhead spot lights are also offered. Facing the bed is a large flat screen TV- it seems all are channels are the local cable network true vision. The guide is a challenge to find at back of full hotel folder - better they put it inside the remote holder. The TV though is good size with decent clarity. There is also a kind of Nespresso machine in which they include 4 complimentary pods each day. Other teas also available plus each day 2 water bottles above the mini bar & in bathroom. The mini bar only has drinks no snacks but family mart is only a few minutes walk away. If like me to put the free waters in the fridge, don't make the mistake of drinking a different water by accident unless you want to pay for it. Next to TV is a luggage box with place to put shoes below. There is also a working desk with mirror and plug sockets , quite basic but ok to work from and do say make up. A large wardrobe is offered by entrance , this has plenty of coat hangers, decent laptop size safe, iron and board, robes, x2 hotel umbrellas and some slippers.(slippers are not worth opening). The bathroom is of medium size but offers a large shower cubicle offering both rain and seperate head. Not sure if it's time of day I took (6-7pm) but found the shower to never be that warm though sink was. This was same in the free waiting room shower, room after check out- shower was freezing. The hotel offer a full set of hotel branded amenities box including shower gel, shampoo and body lotion mini bottles - don't worry if you forgot your toothbrush or razor it's all offered. In addition two beach towels as well as bathroom showers are good enough quality. The highlight of the room however is the balcony, nice comfy wooden chairs to eat out and look at the view of the pool area. In addition those that didn't bring a laptop or phone - the hotel provides a complimentary iPad with general wifi plus local information, weather and guide to hotel, very innovative initially. It be great though if they manage to do a CitizenM hotel and have iPad control TV, lighting and AC - but this iPad is just a guide and option to surf net without using Internet cafe. Most of the information in it is not that clear but web search resolves that. By 10am on my check out day (they check out at 12) they already had another guests name on it and while I was going thru menu - all areas were empty. Overall room is fairly good, AC worked well, exceptionally clean, comfortable and modern. Not very Thai authentic style but innovative and enjoyable. My complaint is that if your a light sleeper choose lower floor, on top floor I could here thumping bass from nearby clubs, that once you notice is quite annoying (buts not that loud like directly next door). To be fair I did request a high floor though. Facilities The hotels offers free open WIFI that for the most part worked very well. It just slowed down during a mega rain storm. There is a public computer in reception area as well that worked fine. Plus obviously iPads. Lesuire facilities include two pools, plus two elevated area pools sort of jacuzzi but without the function or it wasn't working. The pool is nice, not that big but ok in low season. Deck chairs are a bit grubby they could with having some towels on offer, say by pool bar, to cover the plastic sheets - rather having to go all the way back to room to get towels. They also offer a gym in which offered decent amount of equipment weights with one of each type of cardio equipment. In terms of catering there is one restaurant where breakfast and dinner is served. Breakfast was ok, they have some Thai dishes but also an egg station & good standard of breads and fruits. As others noted the fruit juice is naff in terms of quality. I tried dinner since the hotel & room service since the hotel offers 20% discount (perhaps a low season thing). Food was well presented but compared to other Ao Nang restaurants lacking in flavour - a spicy dish is not very spicy at all (highly recommend the Fisherman bar /restaurant at end of beach better value for money, amazing ambience watching waves crash, and fish is delicious). There is also a pool bar but wasn't in operation on my visit - perhaps due to low season in early October. The hotel does offer a lounge room as an alternative complimentary option for guests checking out later where this is not available. Nice option to have this room, which has sofas, TV and a shower and they will stow your luggage. There is also a tour desk at hotel but it's hardly worth it- they charge for example - Hong island tour 1500bt and you can walk 15 metres and tour office will charge 600bt.(All trips are the same just different tour operators) i asked about difference , told none with staff basically breaking and saying I was better off buying tour outside. Some other guests also commented on this when I did the tour. If they are not planning to be competitive then they might as well not offer a tour desk. Staff didn't seem too enthusiastic about it. They also offer moped for 250bt, again it's cheaper only slightly outside but hopefully the L uses reputable companies. They also play music thru the corridors very much cafe del mar type chill out music, it is quite a nice touch to the ambience. Staff Staff at hotel were some of the most sincere I have experienced in Thailand and this is after visiting 70% of the country and staying in a lot of variation of hotels. They naturally make you feel welcome and are somewhat helpful with any questions. Staff are reactive rather than proactive , meaning if you say hi they will respond but not before. Overall they were nice enough but the room was the strength. They don't go out their way even as saying so much as happy birthday. I liked the L resort because it's super clean, comfortable and modern. Value for money though is not that great, it's not really a resort but a boutique hotel, they charge same fees meaning it's slightly overrated for price. Next time I would rather stay more traditional Thai place, say the Krabi resort nearby which has its own garden with deck chairs facing the sea. L is all about location.

Meitetsu Inn Hamamatsucho (Tokyo, Japan)

4 Case Rating
Location The hotel is located down a side street in the Daimon area of Tokyo. Quite easy to find from Daimon station around 5 minutes walk away. The area is fairly good place to be in Tokyo, many bars, restaurants and shops nearby plus the impressive Tokyo tower is 15 minutes walk away which is close to an interesting temple called Zoijoji. Room The smallish room was the most modern & innovative I've stayed at so far in Tokyo. A very comfortable twin bed, slumberland branded with two pillows one of which had some kind of rice seeds. Slept well. To the side of the bed is convenient switch to control the light including a dial dinner option. There is a desk below with a large safe , small fridge & cupboard with a kettle inside. There is an impressive tablet on the counter top that offers a menu of the hotel guide, local area guide - such as restaurants, attractions all very helpful. Plus a entertainment guide with a you tube for music, cartons, even mediation videos. Overall very helpful. There is also a very helpful plug that offers every kind of adaptor for charging your phones or tablets, everything from iPhone, Samsung, Blackberry and Nokia etc. The desks had two US plugs and a phone with a large mirror and comfortable circular chair for working. At the end of the bed there is a large TV - though no guide is offered and therefore TV was only in Japanese, however Netflix is offered at a charge. The room offers a trouser press, slippers and open wardrobe. The bathroom has the standard combined shower & bath. Shower gel, shampoo & conditioner in large bottles. A razor, toothbrush, comb & body towel? Plus a shower toilet is offered. In addition the room offers some kind of air humidifier/purifier not entirely sure what it was but looked innovative. Overall a clean and comfortable room with nice window modern decor and has a degree of being cosy though it is small. Facilities The hotels offers free WIFI which worked fast on my macbook but kept dropping on my iPhone. There is a 24 hour family mart adjoined to the hotel but no other facilities are offered. Staff Staff spoke some English and were efficient with check-in as requested offering me a room on high floor. They also gave me a umbrella to borrow to walk to Tokyo Tower during the rain. Overall a decent hotel in a good location with a clean cosy room and free WIFI.

Narita Excel Hotel (Tokyu, Japan)

4 Case Rating
Location Hotel is located near all major hotels off the main road to Narita airport. There is a coach every 30 min - 1 hour (depending on time of day) back & forth from airport. The hotel claims to be 30 minutes walk to the town of Narita, though a shuttle bus to the town is offers but unsure of frequency. It is a little too far to walk after a long flight. Within vicinity though is a 7/11 convenience store around 10 minutes from the hotel, if like me you awoke after 10pm and are in need of food, this was handy as only food option since all catering outlets are closed after about 10:30pm. Room My room was located in annex building on the top (11th floor). It offered a great view of Narita airport runway in the distance. The room offered a small double bed which was soft and comfortable but no pillow menu. Next to bed is the typical 80's switch alarm clock but also controls of light switch. There is also a two but small person sofa and table. Facing the bed is a luggage rack, a wooden desk with mirror and large TV that offers some English channels such as fox new, BBC and CNN in addition to local channels. A DVD player is also offered. Below is a small refrigerator but small was offered but empty and a Japanese digital kettle. In corridor is an open wardrobe with about six coat hangers plus slippers & pyjamas are offered as amenities. There is also an air purifier unit and digital AC is offered but I preferred the Windows slightly open. The bathroom is standard small Japanese style but with a dated bidet and deep small bath shower combo. Large bottle amenities are offered with shampoo, conditioner, shower gel. No body lotion so bring your own if you have a long flight & tend to dry out. There is a basket though with dental, shaver, hair brush, shower cap & vanity kits offered. Plus a hair dryer. Generally the room was comfortable and more international standard than some other if the Japanese brands. Facilities The hotel is 4.5 star hotel in terms of facilities. 4.5 star because it's not in particular of a 5 star standard. Catering includes 3 outlets: a general restaurant, Japanese dining and Chinese dining. All of which are closed by 10pm. There is though a lounge bar in which is open until 1130pm. Room service is also available but a fairly small menu is offered and is only until 11pm Leisure facilities are fairly good though simple. They offer a good long indoor pool that is great for laps. There is also an outdoor pool in which is more for cooling down when the daytime is hot than for exercise. There is a gym of mostly cardio equipment but adequate equipment is offered. A tennis court was also noticed. In addition is a typical and separate male and female Japanese sauna which also offers cooling pools- quite a nice facility with chairs to relax after the hot sauna and washing amenities such as mirror tables to leave all refreshed etc. Other facilities include some chargeable foot and massage chairs plus a massage spa that offered various Hawaiian lomi lomi massage types. A nice Japanese garden is also on site, quite nice for a short walk thru. A small shop is offered and a flower shop plus a bridal banquet salon ,in addition some vending machines exist. In terms of business facilities, there are various banquet halls though more aimed towards wedding it seems than conferences plus a very small business centre that offers two windows based computers and a printer- all chargeable at 100 Yen for 10 minutes. Since no smoking is unusually not allowed outside on site premise, they offer an inside smoking room which was well ventilated but no seating. Staff Staff as always in Japan are very efficient. Check in/out was fast and as I made a request thru hotels.com - the top floor room was offered. This hotels takes special requests seriously. I did loose my iPhone cable on the flight and asked if I could borrow one with leaving my passport or credit as deposit but hotel were very reluctant though they will take phone and charge it for you. Overall this hotel appears to be an air crew hotel plus airlines use for passengers to stay following flight disturbances. This Japanese hotel has good facilities and room was spacious when comparison to equivalent Japanese though not quite the comfort of the nearby Ramada. Though saying that it is good value for catching flights at Narita. One criticism for an international airport is lack of food options when waking up late since everyone is jet lagged and sleeps at different times, room service should be 24 hours. They seem to keep the restaurant open for disrupted airline passengers but not for full paying guests.

Sheridan Beach Resort and Spa (Palawan Island, Philippines)

4 Case Rating
Location The resort is located around 1.5-2hrs drive away from Puerto Princesa. There is a shared van at set times that costs 1000 peso round trip or private one way is 2-2500 pesos (one way) the hotel offers it at 2,800. If you don't book with them, you need to contact them but it's not an easy process. To get to El Nido is 5.5hrs drive away. The wharf (to get boat to the underground river) is a 5 minute walk away. Room The very wooden finish of my 2nd floor room was fairly spacious offering two beds, medium softness in which I found was comfortable for sleeping. Back lit lights are behind with plug sockets next to each bed. Between the beds is a bedside table that has a lamp, telephone & one spare plug socket. A symmetrical look faces each bed with opposite wall offering a wooden desk & chair with a large mirror in front & two plug sockets on each desk. There is a TV in the middle above a cabinet that contains a refrigerator with beers & juices. TV has 18 channels both Asian, Russian & American choices such as HBO & discovery channels are offered. Along walk way to bathroom is a open shelf, where the kettle is with slim selection of sachet coffee and tea. They do offer a 1 litre complimentary large bottle of water though in glass bottle (replenished each day). Some snacks from the mini bar items are here. Below is a luggage rack for smaller cases & below that another shelf that offer complimentary hotel branded flip flops. Opposite is a wooden wardrobe, 2 robes & some coats hangers plus a small safe really for jewellery & money only etc but not large enough for a big camera or laptop. However the hotel is quite secure and I didn't worry leaving my stuff out. The bathroom was spacious & is the most modern part of the room. A large shower cubicle is offered, granite finish top sink area with good lighting. Hotel branded amenities include dental kit, cotton buds & mini bottles of shampoo, shower gel, soap & body lotion. There is also a torch on side of sink. No bottle water in bathroom that you usually find in Asia etc so assume tap water is clean to brush teeth with. In addition as my room is on second floor a balcony was offered with tall stools & a small matching table. If you are on the ground floor you get one sun lounger. Overall the room is dated but nonetheless comfortable, some maintenance issues with 3 lights not working but still clean. It had a separate AC unit in the corner controllable via remote. Facilities Catering includes a restaurant near the sea that has quite an extensive breakfast buffet catering to both westerners and Asians alike with an egg & noodle station. There is also a lunch & dinner buffet offered depending on occupancy. However there is wood oven pizza which I had & was generous & enjoyable, plus a very extensive menu of Chinese, Filipino & western choices like Burgers & Pasta. Also like the local restaurants on the beach outside - there are barbecue fish options. The restaurant, though expensive compared to others on the beach, does have a really nice ambience at night with a live singer and candle lit tables outside. Quality of buffet is also good, tasted fresh & some interesting items. There is also 3 bars other than the one in the restaurant. One is tiki hut style closest to the beach, another inside the pool that you can swim up to & another located on one side of the pools which is also a games room. You can order food from these locations & 24 hours room service is available. Business facilities include free secure WIFI for multiple devices, it worked in my room off/on just slow for my MacBooks but my iPhone wouldn't pick it up. It does drop frequently but at this location what can you expect, At some areas like the restaurant & lobby area it is stronger & phone works there. There is a library by reception with book & dvd rentals available. It is an area you can sit & check your emails as well as just get out of the sun for a bit. The room also contains two computers but this was the first hotel in all of my reviews to charge to use them (150 peso per hour)- they are simple computers and I did not see any printers. There is also a small shop selling souvenir of crafts & coffee shop selling drinks deserts & some odd Korean items such as s happy shower head. Conference / function facilities are also available in adjoining building near reception. Leisure facilities are of course extensive, suitable for families and adults. The pool is huge, really long for laps & is the best feature of the resort, there is also 4 different size jacuzzi pools. There is an outdoor but covered small workout gym - weights & cardio. Looked modern. Facilities for young children are good as they include a tree house & covered play area outside with teddy bears & toys etc. For adults there is a chess set, multiple pool tables, table tennis & beer pong offered at the side bar. There is also a SPA which offers 30% off during sunbathing hours of 10-4pm. Lyn gave me a really impressively good standard of massage fixing my bad back which condoned the high price when compared to outside local beach side places. There is a tour desk & the hotel kindly arranged my underground cave tour before I arrived since it was a short stay. You need a permit to go (so contact hotel & email passport copy if your stay is short). Also the hotel has an organic farm that you can visit & paint trees- this is 5km away & apprently many items in the restaurant are home grown there such as rice & fruit. Other tours include the zipline, mangroves, snorkelling etc. You can also hire mountain bikes. In the evening I arrived they have a huge projector screen close to the beach where they organise a movie night placing the sun loungers there. Quite relaxing sitting with a beer with fresh sea air but loungers could do with cushions. There are also some really nice hammocks between the palm trees at the beginning of the beach (part of hotel) .These are great for relaxing & rocking while listening to the sea. The hotel also have there own swimming area in the sea & plenty of sun loungers. The beach itself is clean but don't expect to see any fish, their swimming area is also quite shallow. Staff Staff are the highlight and I found them to be very consistently friendly, always acknowledging guests & easy to talk to. I would say the discipline & friendliness is better than some 5 star's I've stayed at & I give this the most credit from the staff. Overall a nice resort & great alternative place to stay in Palawan with benefit of being with walking distance of getting a boat to the underground caves, which is worth seeing. Resort does have a very relaxing ambience & the staff are the highlight, the rooms could just do with being better maintained & more modern.

Holiday Inn Express Causeway Bay (Hong Kong, China)

4 Case Rating
Location Located from a 5-10 minutes walk from MTR Causeway Bay station , so long you exit at Time Square mall- Exit A. Whilst this hotel is opposite Time Square Mall, the metro has long walk ways & escalators from actual train. From airport it takes about 30 minutes to Hong Kong station, if you arrive late at night a Taxi will charge around 45HKG- it makes it more easier especially with large cases. Otherwise its 3 stops to Hong Kong Island via the MTR. Around hotel is a huge mall, many restaurants, boutique shops, bars and Wan Chai is about 15 minutes walk away. Everything you need in a city is close by. Room The room on the 29th floor, the highest floor as requested (at no extra charge) offers a nice view of the concrete jungle below. The room is very functional - offering a comfortable bed that offers side reading lights, soft and firm pillows of your choice (labelled that way). Bedside tables each side, one of which offers a plug and other has an alarm clock with lightning cable for all up to date I phone users. There is a small safe below for things like money and passport- not big enough for laptops. There is almost floor to ceiling Windows offering a great view, which offers a working desk next to it, with LAN cable, 2 handy plug adaptors, lamp and a phone. Opposite is a small sofa great for watching the city from the view. The room also offers a small LCD TV with about 42 channels that include local, Australian, BBC, US and Chinese channels- quite comprehensive selection. There is also a wardrobe with a few coat hangers & a small empty refrigerator inside. Two bottle waters are offered complimentary in the bathroom. Plus a portable luggage rack. The decor is colourful but not that innovative. AC is old style dial and switch but worked fine. The bathroom is quite poky but toilets does have its own door. There is a shower cubicle with dispenser soap and rather than have shampoo or body lotion they have dental kits, plus soaps and shower caps. Overall the room couldn't be faulted for the business traveller looking for value for money. I slept very well and enjoyed the view. Facilities There is free open un-secure WIFI for multiple devices which worked satisfactory. Business facilities included an Internet corner which has 2-3 Windows computers and one Apple . Free to use to look at internet but obviously printing and copying is chargeable. There is also meeting room and a self- serviced ironing room. Catering includes a free breakfast selected from a menu with 2 choices for westerners and 2 Chinese & 1 vegetarian from a set menu (see photo). This is in a sort of trying to be French restaurant. Food is ok but quite constrictive compared to a simple buffet. There is also vending machines in the lobby. Within actual building though there are other restaurants though not part of hotel but area outside has many choices. There are no leisure facilities such as a small gym. Staff Staff at reception are helpful though lack enthusiasm but that's HK in general. The restaurant manager is an interesting force to be reckoned with - he is ok. He wasn't impressed when I requested lemons for my sore throat but to be fair he did oblige. Overall nice hotel, cannot fault the room. Good location, quiet with a street across with nice bars and restaurants. I would stay here again, it just a shame it doesn't offer a gym or some leisure facilities.

Atlantic Affair Boutique Hotel (Cape Town, South Africa)

4 Case Rating
Location Hotel is located about 2 blocks from the main costal road in Sea point, a quieter area of Cape town en route to the nice beaches of Camps Bay & Clifton - of which are less than 5km away. You can walk to the beach road in less than 5 minutes & within area there is also some restaurants and a shopping mall also about 5 minutes walk away. There is not much going on in terms of nightlife but the odd restaurant does exist. From CPT airport it takes about 30 minutes, to Table Mountain cable car about 10 minutes drive and to places like Simons town is one hour to one hour and a half to Cape Point. The waterfront is 5-10 minutes drive away as is downtown Cape town. Room Very spacious room on the 2nd floor that has a studio apartment type design. There is a small kitchen area as you enter, sink with a microwave, coffee machine, toaster and full set of tableware and glasses underneath in cupboards are provided. There is a large mini bar fridge and a dining table for two. A tall wardrobe offers two robes, slippers and a mini safe- not for laptops or tablets but passports, money etc. There is a desk that offers two non SA sockets as the sockets in SA are unique and adaptors will not fit them. The two sockets include a British three pin and 2 pin US/Euro socket but only by the desk area. There is also a LAN cable and mirror but no lamp etc though a plant was there. An artistic and interesting comfortable chair as well as some unique statues on the side of desk gave it the boutique feel. There is a very small TV for this day and age at 22' but does have some decent channels movies, local and international such as BBC- a guide is provided in room. Its ok watching from bed. The bed is huge, a definite large king spacious for two that even 3 people could easily sleep in. It is very comfortable with soft padded bedding and plenty of pillows. Bedside tables on each side, one side tissues other phone. Above bed are convenient flexible reading lights plus a fan though only low setting were available on remote as the med and high buttons were pulled out. In addition there is a remote by the bed to control AC unit in the kitchen area in which worked well and actually nice to have at a distance, plus if it gets cold there is a wall heater I think- a plate with a plug against the wall by the dining table. A full size mirror is against the wall plus a small balcony for smokers- in which my room had a large tree leading on to it- giving it a nice natural feel. The bathroom is quite small but modern with cubicle containing overhead shower head only. Hotel branded amenities include full set of bottles such as shampoo, conditioner, shower gel and body lotion etc. Overall the room is cosy & offers a contemporary interior design feel with lighter colours, suitably boutique beach life style with romantic ambience from the plenty of pillows, fabric chairs and a large rug.Quite a bit of effort in attention to detail but in terms of functionality, could do with a few more international plugs, though I think adaptors are available at reception, also a clock is needed as check out is early at 11am. Saying that it had a nice vibe to it. It wouldn't say this is a hotel or an apartment but somewhere in between at least room 202. I liked the fact there was a tree outside my balcony so it felt quite tropical in the morning. Facilities The hotel offers free WIFI- secure in which you need different login details per device, staff are happy to offer multiple codes. WIFI though is very slow at times- perhaps its something to do with MAC's since the hotel guide gives instructions for windows machines only. It also won't work with VPN. According to guide laptops are available complimentary at reception. There appeared to be coffee machine in reception area and small area for tea etc but not as such a catering facility. Local coffeeshop is down the road and a menu is provided in room guide. Whilst there are no traditional leisure facilities the hotel is very artistic and despite the obvious interesting art work you see upon arrival, there is also an art galley available on request but I did not have time to see it. Parking is available but limited space not matching the amount of rooms. However I had no issue it is very secure inside a code required access gate. There are also elevators for those with heavy luggage. Staff Staff at reception during check-in was really informative and helpful, making a tea and then having a general chat about my short 24 hours in Cape town providing a map and where to go which was most helpful.

Z Executive Boutique Hotel (Bucharest, Romania)

4 Case Rating
Location Hotel is located just off a side street from E81 in city centre, minute walk from Universitate metro station. This is the square where the intercontinental hotel is and where the 1989 revolution started from. From OTP airport it takes about 30 minutes and is about 17km. Famous sights such as Bran in the Romanian countryside are about 160km away or 2.5 hour drive. This is the old part of the city and a quick walk at night reveals very interesting old building and mainly the intensive bar culture night life, therefore a great place to stay if you like to party and go for drinks. Noise does not affect the hotel though as the bar streets are a 5-10 minute walk away. Tourist sights are walkable and in particular you are on the door steps of Bucharest Municipal Museum. The Palace of Parliament is probably a 20 minute walk. However the architecture and building in this old part of the city are very beautiful and impressive. Overall an excellent location for Bucharest. Room The room on 6th floor was an interesting feature. very clean, boutique design, very east european classy if you understand me. The room offers a very comfortable double bed whereby each side offered a bed side table and had convienient euro power sockets (staff can lend adaptors). Next to bed are flexi reading lights, though my side did not work. Above are interesting blue lights as overheads along with central spotlights and inner wall interior lights- many light options. Facing the bed is a large mirror and luggage rack - this is also where the desk is located but unfortunately it is clustered with stuff- such as the kettle, phone, the non working lamp and hotel guides etc plus part of the mini bar items. They offers free coffee sachets and green tea. Below is the mini bar, which is like the oldern days full of miniature liquor bottles but also soft drinks and some food items. The modern LCD TV is above the desk requires controlling from a cable box below- the two tv controls become confusing initially. There are many channel mostly local / regional but also German, French and English- BBC world etc and American channels such as Nat geo. The room has a side room in which was very convenient which offered an open wardrobe basically but in a room that you can close. There are many square pigeon holes and a laptop size safe that was easy to use. Plenty of coat hangers as well. Slippers, shoe polish are offered in here as well. The bathroom was interesting, they are trying the Asia/Chinese thing with a window that opens out into the bedroom. Though it does have blinds but perhaps you might see the TV from the toilet seat but the design is really about design rather than actual effectiveness. The bathroom though is spacious and offers a circular cubicle with rain shower and mini shower head. The sinks has spotlights but did not find a switch to use them. Amenities are odd- the shower cubicles has a fixed dispenser with the sign "professional shampoo and shower gel from Sweden by Tork" but there are still x2 mini bottles of shampoo- why not body lotion or conditioner. The room offers air-conditioning from a remote control unit and worked ok. Lighting was very good in this room, many options they just need to check all are working such as the desk lamp. Blue lights are weirdly offered overhead for that blue 'moment'. However an artistic room and enjoyed it. Facilities Business facilities include free secure WIFI for multiple devices- worked great. In reception one laptop computer and fixed tablet by reception. Worked ok. There is also a function room on the roof- more for private parties than meeting rooms etc. Catering included a bar (you get a welcome drink voucher upon arrival). A restaurant where you get 10% off with the welcome drink voucher. There is a restaurant on the top floor (9th) with fantastic views that offers quite a nice breakfast, unusual items but nonetheless enjoyable. Mostly continental buffet but there is a egg to order menu which includes omelet & eggs Benedict. Leisure facilities include a spa that offers a multiple massages with Balinese being the main alternative one. A general food massage costs 100 Lei for 45 minutes or a full 90 minute Balinese is 223 lei. There is also parking but it can prove difficult if road is blocked. Staff will try their best though. Otherwise you can use underground public parking at a charge. Staff Staff are really nice at this hotel. Very helpful with information about the city, warm and friendly and speak English very well. Overall excellent value for money hotel, right in the heart of old centre of Bucharest. Could do with better maintenance standards ensuring all lights works but otherwise a nice hotel, more aimed at the romantic couple, leisure traveller than the business crowd, though there is a desk to work on.

Aerotel Airport Transit Hotel Terminal 1 (Changi Airport, Singapore)

4 Case Rating
Location Located on first floor in terminal 1 upstairs. It is near transfer area D. Quite easy to find due to good signage as its in the worlds best airport - everything and anything you need is at this airport but for longer transits this is a reasonably priced transit hotel to get some rest. Room The room was spotlessly clean, modern & functional. Wooden floor and fabric walls in light & brown colours with dim-able spot lighting creating a relaxing ambiance. Two single sized comfortable beds  were offered with a table in between containting easily assessible international plug sockets. In addition flexible spotlights are conveniently placed on each bed corner, great for reading. The room also included an arm chair, small side table & large desk with 3 pin plug socket plus a telephone. Perfect for both the business traveller that needs to get on with some work & can't sleep and those that just need rest. Directly facing the beds and above the desk is a very clear LG new flat screen TV.  Such channels  offered include  BBC, RT, BHK, CCTV, CNBC, history, HBO, Nat Geo, carton , sports & movie channels. Asian channels as well. A Luggage rack and open wardrobe is also presented next to the TV with a few coat hangers. There are no windows in my particular room, just wooden shutters.  Temperature was good as  personal digital touch screen A/C is offered. The bathroom was very new & clean with a large shower cubicle.  Overhead rain shower & separate detachable shower head that included amenities of  fixed wall unbranded bottle of combined shampoo & shower gel. However opening a drawer near the sink included a full convenient set of items such as hotel branded dental kits, comb, shower cap & vanity box. Plus two sets of slippers. The towels were thick of decent standard and easily accessible hair dryer close to the large mirror. In terms of noise, unfortunately some work was being carried out at the airport during my stay. Staff did explain this at check-in but it was very noisy in the middle of the night so bad that I could hear drilling through the walls. Despite the warning I think the hotel should of considered offering guests some ear plugs, which of little cost during this inconvenient period. Facilities WIFI is free upon registration of your passport or phone for 2 devices or more - worked fast but it is the same as the standard  free WIFI available airport code. The main highlight of the Aerotel is the swimming pool,  this is the only airport in the world to offer a swimming pool as non guest can also use  this facility at a cost of SQ$17 for 3 hours. The pool is of medium size, which is great for a dip in this humid city but maybe not suitable for laps. There is also a jacuzzi next to it but plenty of sun loungers. The deck does offer a nice view of  the airport apron and runway. This is also the only hotel catering facility is which is the pool bar offering light meals and cocktails. Other leisure facilities include a small gym, mostly cardio equipment and a library room is also for guests. Staff Check-in staff were unfortunately the weakness at this hotel. At check-in, they failed to explain the pool to me or any details only that I have 6 hours within the pre-paid agreed rate. However I decided to stay an extra hour with increased rate confirmed to me. However at check-out a different staff member tried to charge me two more hours for no reason. I found this staff member whom claims was the manager to be quite rude as I hadn't gone over my time but he simply argued that previous staff member told him to charge me for 2 hours for no apparent reason. In the end I had to argue to get this resolved but it was not pleasant lasting impression. Overall the room was comfortable of reasonable value but  was spoilt unfortunately the airport middle of the night building work, though this was explained as a warning. The hotel should consider  offering ear plugs. Customer service is also evasive.
