Metro Mirage Hotel Newport (Sydney, Australia)

3 Case Rating

The hotel is located in Newport in which is in Northern beaches area of Sydney- about an hour drive from downtown or SYD airport. Within area is some local beaches such as Summer Bay/ Palm Beach (where Home & Away was filmed) about 15-20 min drive. In Newport itself there is just a pharmacy, local store/post office and a cafe plus a bay of yachts and sailing boats, Next door is a hotel that offers a local bar/gambling place.

Room on 5th floor was spacious but dull non-characterising décor presented with a musty smell. A king size bed is offered which was sufficiently comfortable with bed side tables and lamps either side. Large alarm clock on one and telephone on the other. There was a TV that faces the bed that offers Foxtel with various movies & sports options.
The room also contains a small plastic table with two chairs- looks like it should be outside etc by design rather than a desk etc. There is a small balony but no chairs- its ok to pop out for some air- or leave open overnight for air. A small pull out luggage rack, a wardrobe with some drawers, plus iron and ironing board is also offered. There is refridgerator full of beers mainly and some soft drinks.
The bathroom is small but has a powerful shower- the highlight of the room. Amenities include soap, body lotion and shampoo. There are some plugs in the room but none close by the bed.
The main issue with the room is the dated A/C which is so loud I had to turn it off as I couldn’t sleep with what sounds like the buzzing sound of a thousand bee’s- better open the balcony doors. Plugs are also limited and in general its not a hotel suitable to work from a personal computer unless you sit in bed as chairs on plastic table are not comfortable. There is also plenty of signs warning they are not responsible for lost items- yet they don’t provide a safe??

WIFI is free and was fine when I arrived after 10pm but very patchy at 7am, kept stopping and was most frustrating.
There is one catering facility which offers breakfast buffet at a cost of AUS$15 plus some in room dining until 830pm but was too late to try. The breakfast places offers a nice view of the bay but declined the breakfast buffet- the eggs especially had been all pre-cooked and didn’t look appetising but dried up. There are some cereals & basic breads though.
Leisure facilities include a small pool and smaller kids pool but the weather was bad so did not try it. There is a nice barbeque area that faces the bay view and the sitting outside is covered.
Parking is also offered for free and is covered.

Staff were the highlight – the ginger girl at reception was helpful with directions and so was the Italian guy whom did offer some flexibility with their ridiculous check-out time of 10am (which is the first I have seen so early worldwide). I mean its not a city centre hotel so felt this was a bit tight of the management.

Overall staff are nice but the hotel is dated lacking any effort – at least put up a picture and A/C is the noisest I have ever heard. WIFI is also ropey but the free parking is a bonus.

The Verdict Is...

Blandest room ever but free parking, free WiFI that works well but check out is very early.
