Hyatt Regency Houston (Houston, Texas)

4 Case Rating

Hotel is located right in downtown Houston, about 3 blocks from Main Street Station. Opposite there appears to be construction in building a large Saks 5 Avenue mall, wall greens & Macy’s is 10 minutes walk but I did not see much else, not even a bar etc- its like your in the middle of a business park. That unfortunately is downtown Houston though, which unless your here on business it doesn’t offer much else for a US city.
San Houston Park is nearby though. Hobby Airport is about 13 Miles/30 drives minutes away. George Bush Intercontinental Airport is about 25 miles/1 hour drive away. Opposite direction and also 30 miles/1 hours drive is Nasa with Galveston 20 minutes further.
I drove to Austin and San Antonio as found Houston not much to offer in terms of stuff to do unless you want to spend all your time in museums. Those places are about 2.5-3 hours drive away. Dallas is about 4 hours away.

King Room on the 3rd floor opposite the gym was a spacious room. A corridor leads to a square room with king size square bed, not as comfortable as say Sheraton or Crown plaza but soft and decent enough. Each side though had bed side tables with one side offering an innovative, an finally an alarm clock that caters for the Apple lighting charge stand (ihome) which can also play your music. The other side had a phone. Above these tables were handy plug sockets- x2US and 1USB. Plus fixed above lamps.
To the side of the bed is a corner sofa with ball light above it and marble table, ok for chilling and having a beer but not for lying on etc, as no pillows etc. There is also an attached upright chair that looks out of place.
In the corner of the room is a wooden cabinet- here you will find the empty mini bar refrigerator(at least in my room) except for 2 Aquafina bottles of water for $3 each. There is also a coffee / hot water machine and 4 kinds of Tazo sachets of tea.
Facing the bed was a huge TV I recon 60″ or more maybe 72′. It offers 42 major cable channels including movie’s of all major networks. Plus the menu shows your name, local weather etc and bill details on there. Below is a multi AV & USB plug socket built into the wall.
There is a tall wardrobe sufficient space for tall clothes, dress suits and many coat hangers, plus an easy to use laptop size safe, iron and ironing board.
The bathroom is split into two sides as you enter from sliding frosted glass door. Toilet one side closed door and spacious shower cubicle that solely offers a detachable head -sink in the middle between both. Amenities offered include KenetMD branded shower gel, shampoo, conditioner and body lotion, hair dryer and plenty of towels.
The room also has a digital AC unit. Decor is quite mix n match, there seems to be different furnishings colours such as the bed side tables differ and some wall colours- its ok, not dull but basically a business hotel trying to be a little arty but struggling with any defining image. Saying that there is no desk offered to work from so essentially it is not that functional for all business traveller but still offers a good standard of plugs.

The hotels offered free WIFI- secure with room number and name. However can not stream but ok for emails and social media. There is a premium chargeable version to upgrade to.
Catering facilities include a large bar in the lobby- clean and modern but sort of characterless. There is a Starbucks cafe and also a breakfast room with fairly good choices on the menu-scrambled egg, the usual hot and cereals, breads and fruits. Vending machines are offered on each floor
Leisure facilities include a modern gym though predominantly cardio equipment that is open 24 hours, equipment is modern and has TV function on the machines. There is also a small pool but this is not heated- ok later in day as Houston heats up (at least in February) but not earlier.
Business facilities include two Windows based computers near the lobby quite hidden and there is also meeting room facilities on the 2nd floor. An ATM machine also exists as does parking at a fee.

Staff were actually quite nice and friendly but lacked explanation of details and didn’t give me my breakfast coupon on check-in. However they were nice, just not quite efficient.

Overall the hotel is modern but also sterile, yes it is clean but lacks much character. The room was ok comfort enough but I like a desk to work from therefore not so functional but decent size room. There are many hotels in the vicinity and therefore if returning to Houston I will try them. I much prefer Hyatt than regency these days as they have much better & more functional rooms.

The Verdict Is...

Disappointing for a Hyatt, room has no desk to work from, odd defying decor but free WIFI & friendly staff.
