Langham Place, Beijing Capital Airport (Beijing, China)

4 Case Rating
Location Located very close to PEK airport, there is a frequent shuttle service. There is a small park near the hotel that one can walk around and you see aircrafts flying in, since it is the end of the runaway. There is a town around 10-15 minutes walk with lots of shops. If you want to go to downtown Beijing on the cheap then the free shuttle goes every 15 minutes to terminal 3 where one can take the express train and be in downtown in 30 minutes. Room The rooms (6th floor executive) are large, airy, modern and fairly clean, stayed here a few times now in 2016 and the wear and tear is beginning to show since 2012. The boutique design creates a comfortable and spacious environment with decent bedside controls to control specific light and auto-do not disturb function along with ipone/ipod alarm clock. The bathroom is all marble with a modern bath tub and huge shower with individual and rain shower options. There is also a volume control to have sound from the TV in the bathroom and electric blinds, if you wish to watch TV from the bathroom. Facilities The hotel offers free WIFI and this worked ok, it used to re-route thru Hong Kong meaning google and Facebook worked but now it seems that has been stopped. The only thing that is missing at the Langham is a swimming pool and spa, but there is a modern gym with good amount of cardio machines. There though a buffet restaurant and bar, plus a shop. Food overall is meeting a good standard. Staff The staff are friendly, helpful with good English language skills specially at the club lounge on the 6th floor whom are very efficient in welcoming and personally assisting all guests to a very high standard.

Gooseford Farm (Dartmoor, Devon, UK)

4 Case Rating
Location The location is quite deep in the countryside and one would need a sat nav but there are clear sign post's once your about 2-3 miles away. Upon arrival we were welcomed by Mary with some lovely tea and freshly baked cakes which was a lovely touch and left to relax in this large living room with very comfy sofa and a large TV with a warm wood burning fire. Room This area was separated from the main farm family area and specifically for people staying at the Bed & Breakfast part of the farm house. There is a small kitchen area which is where breakfast is served, which also has a lovely view of the Dartmoor hills in the distance. Up a short stairs was the bedroom itself which was fairly large with a comfortable warm double bed and a separate single bed with a bathroom containing toilet and large shower area. There was also a large window that one could sit by and look out over the farm and Dartmoor in the distance- very picturesque. All was immaculately clean and the bed was very comfortable. The shower was also very warm and off good standard. The decor is warm and homely without too much clutter. It is in a very quiet area especially at night which enables a great sleep. In the morning you may here some cookatoo's and moo's but its far from annoying, we found it really exciting to here the sounds of a Farm, especially as we live in London. Facilities Breakfast was one of the best we have ever had, partly because it was so fresh and all home or locally made. The bread couldn't be any more fresher (made that morning), sausage, bacon and egg all tasted absolutely of the best standard and exceeds experience of breakfast that I've experienced at many international 5 * hotels. Staff The general hospitality was warm and professional. Mary would go out her way to ensure we had everything we needed and offer clear advise on the local area whether to have dinner or visit local attractions. I can say we were extremely impressed with our experience, it was also very reasonably priced and would definitely stay here again over any hotel in the Dartmoor area. My girlfirend & I stayed here on the 10th June for one night after just doing a web search of farms in the Dartmoor area in that morning. We hadn't read any reviews or really had any expectations just wanted to spend a night in rural Devon and after staying in a terrible Torquay hotel. We were pleasantly surprised and very impressed with Gooseford Farm. First of all when we called the farm, the lady was very friendly and would hold our room until we got there offering a very relaxed approach (not requiring a certain time or Credit card).

Ramada San Bruno SFO Airport (San Bruno, California, USA)

3 Case Rating
Location A relatively small Ramada hotel located at San Bruno which is about 5-10 min drive to San francisco airport. They offer a free shuttle service which operates hourly and can be contacted by telephone at the hotel shuttle pick up point at the International departures. This can also be used from the Hotel to get to the metro if you wish to travel into San Francisco. The local area though is ok, San bruno is a small town but has a couple of bars, lots of restaurants- mostly mexican but there is a Wendys and IPH. For 24hours dining options- there is a casino about 10 minutes walk away which has bar food /diner type restaurant and is pretty decent. There is also a large shopping mall about 15 minutes walk away that has JC Penneys, sears etc... The high street has a good variety of shops and even great sushi restaurant over the highway. Room The hotel is similar to a motel but the rooms are of a good standard. Large King size beds in a cosy style but spacious room (Room 108), with a large table and chairs, mini bar and large flat screen TV. The general decor is typical of American conservative style and it is very clean. The bathroom is also presented immaculately clean with a spacious area that includes shower (with different functions) over the bath, and again is quite large compared to European standards. There is a fairly decent heater/air conditioning unit which is easier to use and works well. The room itself had a window which looks out into the interior of the building courtyard. Facilities There is a sauna, jacuzzi facility and small gym with a couple of treadmills & cross trainers. There is breakfast included but it is very disappointing served in a very small odd looking building, the breakfast offers tea, juice, 2-3 types of cereals, a bowl of bananas, mini bagels, mini muffins (slightly stale) and some waffles that you toast. Its ok for a snack if you are in a hurry. There is free WIFI. Staff Staff were relaxed & helpful enough with advice but not as welcoming as some US hotels.

St. James’s Club Morgan Bay (Morgans Bay, St. Lucia)

4 Case Rating
Location The hotel is located in a beach side resort and there is airport transport provided by mini van- its not far from the airport in Castries. There is no reason to leave hotel unless your on an excursions. However about 20 minutes walk is some shops and supermarket but unfortunately wouldn't recommend leaving hotel as got hassled by some drug addict. Rooms There are two types of rooms, the deluxe and the superior, we saw both but ended up in the superior in the blue building on the top floor of the1100 block, these rooms are more modern with flat screen TV, large king size beds and more modern furnitures, however these premium blocks (900-1200) are further away from the beach and pools, they require a good hard walk up and down the hill though through nicely decorated landscapes. The view from all these rooms is spectacular from the balcony we were very impressed to see a view of the whole resort, sea and sunset from high above. It also was a quieter zone although you could still faintly hear the nightly entertainment from the sunset lounge below. Inside the room everything was clean and white, the bathroom was nice and big and marble. House keeping was very good, room cleaned well everyday by 11am. Our complaints was that the phone didn’t work and after regular requests from our agent never got repaired, the remote on the TV was sometimes non functioning and the aircon can be a little noisy. Food There are 5 restaurants on site. 3 are a la carte, 1 buffet and 1 beach bar for lunch. For breakfast you have 2 choices the Palms and the Bambou. The breakfast is fine but if you require eggs and omletes to be cooked then I would go with the Palms as the chefs in the buffet cook it a lot quicker and there is more variety especially with bread. With Lunch you may have 4 choices, the morgans Piers turns into a barbecue (but is a bit of a wait if you want a burger), the Plum which is by the kids pool and has pizza’s hot dogs etc. The palms is a buffet and Bambou is sometimes a buffet and a la carte for lunch. We had a fantastic a la carte lunch there and the view is the best from the Bambou. For dinner you have Le Jardin French creole style, which by far has the best service but you must book in advance. The staff at all these restaurants offer good attentive service and will happily make amendments to your order. There is quite a few bars, which will stock basic premium brands with lots of rum, but be wary of heartburn! Facilities There are four pools, two in the main area, one with a swim up bar, an adult pool with a bar area and a children's pool. They were all clean. There is also a small gym, tennis courts and games room which were adequate. The other main facilities are Water skiing, windsurfing, sailing, aqua cycling, kayaking, snorkeling, banana boating, some require booking in advance but the watersports guys are very helpful. You can even borrow snorkel if you leave the resort for the day. There is also WiFi but it only works in the public areas but is fast. The beach itself is secluded and clean but close to shore is not that crystal clear water, you have to go out a bit for that, meaning that snorkeling isn't that great. The nightly entertainment is ok but nothing particular spectacular but the dancers are really good (especially when they do the fire dance) and the band is ok. Staff The staff is what makes this resort, they were so nice, helpful and always an honest & happy approach to serving guests especially in the restaurants. This is the same for tour organiser and reception staff, always smiling and keen to help you out. We had an excellent holiday and really enjoyed our staff at Morgan bay.

The Grand Hotel (Torquay, Devon, UK)

“2
Location Located right in centre of Torquay on the sea front. Stayed here for a wedding. Very close to all that Torquay has to offer with easy walking distance to beach and shops on the promenade. Room The room was ok, quite cosy on the top floor in one of the turrets. It had a weird design with a large sort of reception room entry separated from main bedroom and bathroom. The room was extremely hot, even with central heating not on. There is a pipe running around the room covered by a large skarting board which is the source of the heat, there is no way of cooling it other than opening the windows, but even then had to sleep on top of covers. Also they include a horrible "itchy" blanket on the bed which when we asked the house keeping to remove, they refused to saying it had to be there. so we kept having to pull it out of the bed. The bed frame itself was also old and arched which caused back problems with my partner. Facilities The restaurants had nice decor form 20's art deco period but the service is a disappointment, staff were quite miserable and rude responses at times when asking for service, dinner for some reason on a Saturday night closes at 9:30pm!!! There is a pool area but another guest at the wedding party told the story of having to fish out a "floater" the day before in which the staff didn't seem to care about. I visited this pool area and it looked rather unclean although the rest of the hotel was acceptable. Wont be staying here again. Staff Staff were basically like Faulty towers which is based on a hotel in Torquay. You seem a hassle to them and they are very evasive to any requests. Overall was here for a wedding which had a lot of people and business to the hotel, but the staff had a very poor attitude to service overall to some of the guests in the wedding party.

P. P. Palm Tree Resort (Koh Phi Phi Don, Thailand)

3 Case Rating
Location Hotel is located right in the central area of Phi Phi Island main area, it is just off one of the walk was but does not have a beach front. Room The room was small but very elegant, good digital electrical system for lightening, huge TV, and comfortable beds. The bathroom was ok (shower only) but everything was clean. The decor was traditional Asian and it had a comfy feel about it. Facilities The pool is nice and quite fun but there are literally about 8 sunbeds for the whole hotel but either way Phi Phi has superb beaches so you don't really need a pool. The breakfast buffet was very poor considering the price we paid if I compare to cheaper hotels elsewhere in Thailand. I asked if I could take a yogurt and spoon to my room and it caused a lot of upheaval with the staff. The restaurant is Italian food only and pretty bad to say the least. I only had one dinner there and 8 hours later I was sick. However there are many nice restaurants in the area. There is WIFI available at a cost but you can only buy it at PP Hotel (same company)..and it will only work if you are in a high room. Staff We pre-booked this hotel based on positive reviews and it was the most expensive hotel of all of the 7 hotels booked on our trip. So naturally we expected a warm welcoming. First off I found the night time reception staff quite rude, they delivered a list of rules to us upon arrival like we were entering some centre. These rules included no visitors and no smoking anywhere including your personal balcony where as anyone caught not doing this will be thrown out of the hotel and not refunded. No room service. The only hotel I ever stayed at welcomed us with this. Overal came across as rude and unprofessional. Overall this was the 2nd most expensive hotel on the island and I wished we hadnt pre-booked, although the room was nice.it wasn't worth the price or attitude from the staff.

Samui First House Resort (Ko Samui, Thailand)

“2
Location Hotel is located just off a main road in Chaweng Beach and get to the centre of town is about a 20 minute walk. The place is a little seedy and the main town in Koh samui. Lots of go go bars and people hassling you to sell suits and dvds. The beach wasn't that impressive quite rough sea but the weather was bad, and the beach is about a 10minute walk from the hotel. Room The benefits of the hotel was the room as the rest of the hotel is showing its age and is very dated. But the room is of good size and nice with a huge TV. Bathroom was ok as well and a simple but nice breakfast buffet. There is also a balcony with two seats. Facilities There is a gym which unbelievably sells itself on their website is charged about 150 baht an hour (not free as advertised). Same with the Wi Fi cards and internet use. This was in 2009 so may of changed by now. The is a safety deposit system. They keep all your belonging in an envelope in a locker behind reception but you keep the key. Apprently too many safe went missing out of the rooms? It was a bit annoying as you had to wait for staff to get your stuff/money. Staff The reception staff were a bit unfriendly and unhelpful but i think the area 'Chaweng Beach' says it all. We got bored of the area very quickly hired mopeds and went to see Koh Samui which has some amazing places in the mountains and jungle...the magic garden and waterfall 2 to name a few.

See Through Resort Haad Yao (Koh Phangan, Thailand)

4 Case Rating
Location The hotel is located in Haad Yao, (about 40 minute drive from Hat Rin ) a small little village more nicer and relaxed than the chaos at Hat Rin with a couple of shops and a beach full of about 6 or 7 bars joined to other hotels. The beach itself is one of the nicer ones in Koh Phanghan and good for snorkelling although be careful of the coral. Room We had a upstairs room with a balcony with twin beds. It had a nice TV, warm shower and a safe. Very spacious and clean, if you want your room cleaned everyday you have to leave your key at reception. Facilities There is a pool at the hotel but is a bit odd, its the length of the hotel with deep bits and shallow bits along the way. There is a beach bar and the sea is like 5 metres away. The bar is very nice and relaxed and also serves as the restaurant, the bar tenders do blast the music but are eager to listen to tourist music and will put it on. The food here was very nice and clean as the kitchen is open. You can get internet/WIFI free but only at reception. We rented mopeds from here for only 200 bht for 24 hours. Staff Staff are the most friendliest and helpful, everybody is naturally your friend here and from the bar/ restaurant to reception they make you feel very welcomed and eager to help you get the most out of your stay. Overall We decided that out of all 7 seven hotels we stayed at in Thailand ranging from 4-5 star this was our favourite. All in all we were sad to leave this hotel and Haad Yao as we had made a lot of local friends.

Navalai River Resort (Bangkok, Thailand)

3 Case Rating
Location The hotel is situated in one of the best locations in Bangkok for various reasons. The River boat is right next to the hotel, you can walk to most attractions like the Grand Palace and the nightlife in the local area is the best I have seen in Bangkok as the Koh San Rd is close which has many cool bars and restaurants for more the younger crowd. Room The boutique hotel has very nice rooms, comfortable beds, very clean, good aircon, Nice TV. We had a Serene Corner room as we wanted twin beds..our view from the balcony was ok just of the next building and a bit of the river. It was quiet and fine to sleep. Facilities Free WIFI multiple devices. The hotel also has a nice pool on the roof where you have good views of the river and bangkok skyline. The hotel has a restaurant but I believe this is a separate company that allows you to use there breakfast services. The breakfast buffet was ok to Thai hotel standards but nothing special. We decided that it was too expensive for dinner considering there were lots of good restaurants nearby. Staff Staff are a bit mixed. Overall welcoming at reception but the restaurant manager had a bit of an attitude regarding ordering green tea for breakfast demanding payment first etc. It did leave a bit of a lasting impression.
